From a rugged and rocky coastline in the west, steeps mountainsides in the east, and rolling hills and valleys hugging the banks of the Russian River, Sonoma County offers a complete array of styles, varietals and terroir-expression. It covers a vast area of more than one million acres, but a mere 6% are planted to vines – almost half that of Napa. Fog is among Sonoma County’s most defining features, drawn from the Pacific Ocean inland toward Healdsburg and the warmer Alexander Valley, heavily influencing the Russian River Valley itself. Cool air also travels through the Petaluma Gap and San Pablo Bay to the south. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lead the way, with a new generation of winemakers crafting exceptional, modern expressions that embrace the classic richness, while excluding elegance, refinement, and crispness. More recently, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot blends have been capturing plenty of the limelight and serious critical acclaim. Anderson Valley AVA lies just to the north in Mendocino County. Just 20 miles long, and renowned for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this tiny region has less than 2,500 acres under vine and remains relatively unknown which means brilliant value! The Ferrington and Savoy Vineyards are regarded by many winemakers as some of the best in California.

2024 Nid Tisse, Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 12x75cl

JS97TWP97
*Blend: 100% Chardonnay *Vintage production: 130 cases *Nid-Tissé is already well on the way to being one of California’s most sought-after labels, and the naturally low production levels means... getting an allocation at release is essential. Owner and winemaker Marie-Laure Ammons studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy before moving to California where she was hand-picked by Philippe Melka to join his team. Following 18 years at Atelier Melka, gaining hands-on experience at California’s top vineyards, she took the next step in her career to start Nid-Tissé. With her inaugural 2019 vintage releases, Marie-Laure rocketed to the top with her mailing list becoming a waiting list in the blink of an eye. Sommeliers and buyers at the top Michelin-starred restaurants scrambled for an allocation, and the subsequent amazing scores fanned the flames! Towards the Pacific coast, the historic Bacigalupi Vineyard lies in the heart of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Since the early 1970s, this site has been heralded as one of the most important in California, playing a winning role in a certain ‘Judgement of Paris’. While that was a significant moment in time, the wines produced there now are better than ever. Marie-Laure has access to the best block of Wente Clone vines, with the Nid-Tissé Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 seeing 12 months in Burgundian French oak (13% new), followed by 3 months in stainless steel prior to bottling. The result is a gorgeous wine driven by texture and elegance.

2016 Soliste, Terre Promise Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast 1x75cl

*Blend: 100% Pinot Noir *Vintage Production: 117 cases *The story behind Terre Promise is a fascinating one. Don and Claude produced their first MonoClone® Pinot Noir in 2006, crafted from the... Dijon 115 clone in the family’s Sonatera Vineyard. The 115 clone originated in Burgundy where is was saved in early 1950s by Raymond Bernard, who was allowed to graft in Domaine Ponsot’s vineyard in the Grand Cru of Clos de la Roche. It was then sent first to David Lett in Oregon and made its way down to Sonoma. Of the many clones Soliste have worked with, their favourite is Dijon 115.   In 2015, Don and Claude were introduced to Terra de Promissio Vineyard, just south of Petaluma, and fell in love with it straight away. They noted a parcel of Dijon 115 vines, and with their relentless dedication to produce the very best Pinot Noir, they applied their knowledge to create a Pinot worthy of their MonoClone® programme. Of all the wines produced by Soliste, this is Don's favourite - so far...
